Aliyev and Erdoğan Discuss Syria, COP29, Future Cooperation
On December 10, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during which they discussed Azerbaijan-Türkiye relations, regional developments, and support for Syria.
The two leaders emphasized that the brotherly and friendly ties between Azerbaijan and Türkiye are evolving within the framework of a strategic alliance. President Aliyev expressed appreciation for President Erdoğan and First Lady Emine Erdoğan’s active participation in the COP29 Leaders' Summit in Azerbaijan, highlighting the valuable contributions of the Turkish delegation to the conference. In response, President Erdoğan congratulated Aliyev on the successful organization of COP29 and the progress made during negotiations.
Their discussion also touched on regional issues concerning the South Caucasus and the Middle East, particularly developments in Syria after the collapse of the Assad regime. Both leaders congratulated the Syrian people and reaffirmed their support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. President Aliyev expressed hope that a period of stability could begin in Syria with Türkiye’s active support, pledging Azerbaijan's readiness to address humanitarian challenges alongside its "fraternal" partner, Türkiye.
President Erdoğan stressed that Azerbaijan and Türkiye would cooperate on humanitarian aid and support for the Syrian people. The two leaders concluded the conversation by exchanging views on further strengthening their countries' brotherhood and strategic alliance.
