Armenia and Russia Seek Closer Military-Technical Cooperation

The sixteenth meeting of the Armenian-Russian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation was held on 28 March in the administrative complex of the Armenian Ministry of Defence.
Opening the meeting, Deputy Minister of Defence of the Republic of Armenia Karen Brutyan noted the importance of strengthening and developing cooperation between the two countries in the military-technical sphere (MTS). The high-ranking military official expressed hope that during the meeting the participants would effectively discuss the prospects for intensifying joint work in military-technical cooperation.
Russia remains a key military-technical partner of Armenia. Earlier, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic tightened control over arms purchases and changed the procedure for acquiring military products. The decision was taken at a government meeting on 23 June. According to the Cabinet's decision, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces will submit written proposals for procurement. However, they will be approved only with the consent of the Ministry of Defence. The General Staff undertakes to provide a justification for the need to acquire weapons and military equipment (WME), including an indication of the tasks to be performed by the acquired offensive and defensive systems.
