Armenia Constitution Draft Remains in Progress as Government Prepares Final Round of Feedback and Debate
On June 10, Srbuhi Galyan, the Armenian Minister of Justice, stated that work on the draft of Armenia's new Constitution is still ongoing, as several members of the working group have yet to submit their comments and proposals. Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly, Galyan noted that the final version of the document has not been completed, making it impossible at this stage to determine when it will be published. "After completing the text, we will soon be awaiting feedback from some of our colleagues. We will need one to two weeks to collect and refine this feedback, after which we will hold one or two more discussions and decide whether we are ready to publish the text or not," Galyan stated.
The minister emphasized that constitutional reform remains a political commitment undertaken by the Armenian authorities following the Velvet Revolution and later reaffirmed during the election campaign. Commenting on the prospects for adopting a new Constitution, Galyan acknowledged that the ruling party does not currently possess a constitutional majority. Nevertheless, she stated that future decisions would depend on political developments and public sentiment. "We will do our job, assess the scale of public demand and make an appropriate decision," Galyan added.
