Georgia Rejects EU Parliament Draft Report As “Detached from Reality,” Warning of Rising Tensions and Loss of Trust
On May 5, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia issued a statement in response to the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs vote on the draft report concerning the 2025 Commission report on Georgia, prepared by Rasa Juknevičienė, the Member of the European Parliament from Lithuania.
The ministry stated that the report is "entirely detached from reality," accusing it of deliberate distortion of facts, dissemination of disinformation, and manipulation of information. According to the statement, such content damages the reputation of the European Parliament and undermines public trust in EU institutions within Georgian society, contributing to growing public concern and political protest.
The Georgian side further expressed concern over what it described as the use of EU institutions for targeted attacks against Georgia, its democratic institutions, society, and values, including the Georgian Orthodox Church, stating that such actions "grossly offend the religious sentiments of the nation." It added that the report represents an attempt to increase polarization within Georgian society and to distance the democratically elected government from the population.
The statement also criticized what it called "blackmail and intimidation" directed at Georgian society, describing them as interference in internal affairs and unacceptable for any sovereign state. It further argued that attempts to link Georgia’s foreign policy priorities and EU integration process to conditions affecting national security amount to instrumentalization of the accession process and risk increasing regional tensions.
The ministry stated that such an approach undermines relations between Georgia and the European Union and harms shared interests. At the same time, Georgia reaffirmed its readiness for "mutually beneficial cooperation based on respect, trust, and shared values," while calling for a constructive and fair approach from EU institutions.
