Kobakhidze Outlines Economic Ambitions with China While Rejecting Political Speculation About His Possible Resignation
On April 23, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that negotiations are ongoing to expand the scope of the Free Trade Agreement between Georgia and China, noting that specific details will be clarified upon the completion of talks. According to Kobakhidze, the current visit of the Minister of Economy to China is expected to further boost bilateral trade. He emphasized that all key issues will be addressed during the discussions, including the Anaklia project, which he described as one of the main objectives of the visit.
Responding to speculation about his possible resignation, Kobakhidze dismissed such claims, pointing out that similar questions had repeatedly been raised before and after both parliamentary and municipal elections. "You have been disappointed once, twice, three times, four times, how many times do we have to do all this?!" Kobakhidze stated.
Addressing another question, Kobakhidze rejected any notion of rivalry with Mamuka Mdinaradze, emphasizing that there has never been and will not be any competition between them.
Speaking about international support, Kobakhidze highlighted that Hungary was not the only country backing Georgia, expressing hope that the country will continue to have "strong lobbyists" within the European Union institutions. He underlined the importance of the support from Viktor Orban, stating that it has been significant for Georgia over the years. "Hungary was not the only one supporting us, others were also supporting us," Kobakhidze noted, adding that he hopes such backing will continue in the European Commission and the European Council.
When asked whether he anticipates possible sanctions, Kobakhidze dismissed the concern, responding briefly: "You expect whatever you want, I don't expect anything."
