Lavrov Warns Armenia at Critical Crossroads Over EU And EAEU Membership Choice
On June 10, Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, stated that the issue of Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has become urgent and requires prompt resolution. Lavrov noted that Armenian authorities have said there is currently no discussion of withdrawing from the EAEU, while at the same time a law on EU accession has been adopted in Armenia. He said this situation places the matter "at a critical point," adding that it will need to be addressed without delay.
He recalled remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials, stressing that the issue of Armenia’s membership must be clarified quickly. Lavrov emphasized that Russia does not question the choice of the Armenian people, but said it is necessary to clearly understand that choice, since, in his words, the rules of the EAEU and the European Union are incompatible.
The minister also addressed Armenia’s participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), stating that due to outstanding financial contributions for more than two years, the organization may consider applying relevant provisions of its Charter regarding non-fulfillment of obligations by member states. Lavrov further said that respect for the will of the Armenian people should be ensured in a timely manner, warning against a situation where decisions are imposed without public clarity. He stated that the goal is to avoid presenting society with a fait accompli regarding the country’s political direction, stressing the importance of allowing citizens to make an informed choice.
