Peskov: "Armenia Is at A Crossroads in Its Development Path"

| News, Politics, Armenia

On June 24, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian Presidential Press Secretary, stated that Yerevan is currently at a "crossroads" in choosing its development path, a matter he said is of importance to Moscow given the long-standing fraternal relations between Russia and Armenia. Peskov emphasized that Armenia and its leadership are considering future strategic directions, adding that Russia views this decision as significant due to the historical ties between the two countries. He stated that "for many centuries, Russia and Armenia have been neighbors, fraternal countries," noting close cultural and social connections, including Armenian communities in Russia and Russian communities in Armenia.

He further stated that Moscow expects Yerevan to prioritize participation in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), arguing that this integration framework provides stronger economic benefits compared to potential alternatives, including closer ties with the European Union. According to Peskov, the EAEU "annually contributes a significant percentage to Armenia’s GDP growth," and he added that Russia considers its integration model to be more advantageous in qualitative terms than other options. Peskov also expressed hope that both the Armenian leadership and society would reach a similar conclusion after evaluating available choices, reiterating that the direction of Armenia’s development remains a key issue for Russia.

He additionally stated that Russia and Armenia are closely connected through historical and demographic ties, noting the presence of Armenian communities in Russia and Russians in Armenia. He emphasized that the existing integration framework supports Armenia’s economic development and that cooperation between the two countries continues to deepen. Peskov concluded by stating that Russia remains interested in further cooperation with Armenia, describing the relationship as one with substantial shared interests and ongoing economic engagement, including Russia’s role as a major investor in Armenia.
