President Zourabichvili Faces Possible Impeachment Following Constitutional Court's Decision
On October 16, the Constitutional Court of Georgia found that President Salome Zourabichvili violated the Constitution.
The court recognized that the president violated the law when she traveled abroad without consulting the government. Six members of the Constitutional Court supported the MPs' impeachment appeal, while three opposed it.
This decision allows the start of the impeachment procedure. Now, the parliament, within two weeks, must consider and put to a vote the question of removing the president from office. At least 100 members of parliament must support the impeachment decision. However, the opposition members promise to vote against it, so the ruling Georgian Dream, which has sued the president, may be unable to remove Zourabichvili.
