Russian Ambassador-at-Large: "Armenia’s EU Aspirations May Conflict with CSTO and EAEU Membership"

On April 2, Rodion Miroshnik, the Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Armenia is unlikely to reconcile its participation in the CSTO and EAEU with its aspirations to align with the European Union.
During a conversation with journalists in Yerevan, Miroshnik emphasized that Russia has consistently refrained from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, including Armenia. He noted that Armenia’s decisions are independent but drew attention to the experience of other nations, such as Ukraine. He pointed out that Ukraine had enshrined its aspirations to join the European Union and NATO in its Constitution but questioned the progress of this endeavor, suggesting that Armenia’s political leaders should reflect on these lessons. "Politicians should draw conclusions from some analogies, which will be exclusively in the interests of the people of Armenia," Miroshnik stated.
The ambassador further argued that Armenia must carefully consider its economic interests in relation to the European Union, evaluating the potential benefits and markets involved in such a move. He remarked that balancing commitments to both the EU and Russia would likely be unfeasible. "It is unlikely to be possible to sit on two chairs," he emphasized.
Miroshnik reiterated Russia’s support for deepening its relations with Armenia, particularly through economic projects and collaboration within the framework of the CSTO. He concluded by stating that Russia remains open to improving ties, but that the Armenian leadership’s choices will ultimately determine the future course of the relationship.
