Shoigu Warns Armenia That EU Accession Would Require Anti-Russia Sanctions
On March 20, Sergey Shoigu, the Russian Security Council Secretary, warned that Armenia’s potential accession to the European Union would require the country to join anti-Russian sanctions and provide military support to Ukraine.
Speaking with reporters, Shoigu explained that if Armenia joins the EU, it would be obligated to participate in the European Union’s anti-Russian sanctions and military-political decisions. He specifically mentioned the EU's Common Security and Defense Policy and the European Peace Fund, which financially supports Ukraine’s armed forces.
Shoigu emphasized that this would not only create economic challenges for Armenia but also force the country to align with EU policies, including sanctions against Russia, as Brussels would insist on compliance.
