US Ambassador to Georgia: "Fully Independent Court is Crucial for Preserving Democracy"
At a press conference on October 24, Kelly Degnan, the US Ambassador to Georgia, said, "I would hope that the judicial reform that is conducted tackles some of the genuine difficulties facing the courts here, including very heavy workloads."
The Ambassador discussed the High Council of Justice's selection of Levan Murusidze and Dimitri Gvritishvili as judges.
"I believe the European Union will make that determination. The priority is to overhaul the judiciary. It is mentioned in the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union and the list of 12 suggestions. This is undoubtedly a key issue," she expressed.
Kelly Degnan thinks that having a fully independent court is crucial for preserving democracy. "Judicial reform must be a wide and inclusive process that involves civil society, the opposition, and stakeholders who not only have an interest in it but also have excellent ideas about how to strengthen Georgia's judiciary," she concluded.
